To find out for any year, get a calendar that shows church holidays,
and find Ash Wednesday. "Mardi Gras" is Fat Tuesday, the day before
Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, a time of preparation aand
penitence. Hence some cultures party wildly the day before, to get it
out of their system.
"Fat" Tuesday refers to the using up the fat in the kitchen -- lard,
oil, butter -- in the baking of cakes and other things that might be
given up for Lent. While the term is sometimes used for the season,
it is really only one day. The season leading up to it, starting
unofficially after the 12th day of Christmas, is really Carnival.
